WELCOME TO CONTRA COSTA COLLEGE

We are pleased that you are interested in attending Contra Costa College. The presence of international students on our campus and in our community increases our understanding and respect for the many cultures of the world. At the same time, we are confident that students from other countries gain a deeper understanding of American life by living and studying with us.
Contra Costa College is a diverse, full-service community college which serves about 8,000 students each semester. Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, our campus is conveniently located near Berkeley in the East Bay, across from San Francisco. We offer a comprehensive transfer program for students who wish to pursue baccalaureate degrees, Associate degrees and Certificates of Achievement in technical education programs for job skills training, and courses for continuing professional education.
International students have a wealth of programs and services available to them, including the international students office and staff, as well as all other campus facilities such as the library, counseling, tutoring, media and computer centers, bookstore, cafeteria, and athletics.

REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADMISSION

Please read the instructions for admission carefully, and complete all the necessary documents. Submit the paperwork in time to receive the I-20 form (and student visa if necessary) for the semester for which you are applying.

  • Submit a $50 non-refundable application fee. (Cashier's check or money order in U.S. funds, made out to CCC. Do not send cash.)
  • File a completed International Student Admissions Application form. (If you are currently a student at another U.S. college, you must submit written verification from that college indicating that you are in-status and a full-time student in good standing.)
  • Complete the Financial Certification form and submit a certified bank statement verifying available funds (page 8 of the International Student Admissions Application.)
  • Submit the completed Health Statement certified by your doctor or medical staff (page 7 of the International Student Admissions Application.)
  • Complete and sign the F-1 Student Conditions Agreement (page 6 of the International Student Admissions Application.)
  • Submit official transcripts of all high school and college work completed. (Note: Official transcripts must be translated into English.)
  • Submit an official TOEFL Score report, if available. (See enrollment requirements below.) International students can be accepted without any TOFEL requirement.
  • Write an essay explaining your background and future academic and career goals

Enrollment Requirements

International students (F-1 visa) are required to enroll in and complete a minimum of 12 units each semester. Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

English Language Ability

While it is recommended that the students applying to the college have English proficiency that is at least equivalent to a paper-based TOEFL score of 450, international students can be accepted without any TOEFL requirements:
  • Applicants with TOEFL scores under 450 on the paper-based test (133 on the computerized TOEFL) or with no TOEFL must take the English as a Second Language (ESL) assessment test and be advised.
  • These students will study in the credit ESL program until they finish Level Four.
  • Students placed in higher levels of the ESL program may take academic transfer classes with advisor approval.
Students with a TOEFL score of 500 or higher will follow the normal assessment, orientation and placement procedure and will be counseled into appropriate classes.

FEES 2006 - 2007

Tuition and enrollment fees will be collected in full at the time of registration. International student tuition for the 2006-2007 academic year is $197 per unit (subject to change). As indicated on the explanation of costs on the Financial Certification form (page 8), students must verify that they have available approximately $17,000 per academic year. The bank statement must show an actual amount.

TRANSCRIPTS

To qualify for admission, students must have graduated from high school (or have attained a high school graduation equivalency or be at least 18 years of age by the beginning of the entering semester. Official transcripts from your high school and any colleges you have attended MUST be submitted with official English translation.

HEALTH CERTIFICATION

Student applicants must complete the Health Statement (page 7), enclosed in this application packet which verifies that they are in good health and have taken a tuberculosis test or show evidence that they are free of tuberculosis. This form must be certified by your doctor or health professional.

HOUSING

The college does not have dormitory facilities and most students arrange their own housing. While CCC cannot guarantee student accommodations, new students will receive housing assistance when necessary. In addition, guaranteed homestays are available for a placement fee of $300. ORIENTATION AND ADVISING

Upon acceptance, you will be provided information to begin your studies. This information will include dates and times for the new student orientation, counseling and course registration, all of which take place before the beginning of your first semester of study. The orientations and counseling sessions are mandatory.

NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE

The admission packets will be issued by July for the fall semester and by December for spring semester applicants. The acceptance letter and admission packet will not be issued until the Application for Admission is completed. Please complete the Application Checklist (page 3 or 4), indicating all completed documents have been sent and the date when incomplete or missing information will be provided.
