Why study in London?

London is an exciting city in which to live and study. Still one of the world's most beautiful capitals, it is rich in art, music, theater and literary history. It is the seat of the British government and the world’s longest surviving monarchy. More than forty theaters provide unrivaled opportunities for students to experience live, professional productions. Four major symphony orchestras and two opera companies reside in London. For followers of contemporary music, London offers an unparalleled range of live rock and ethnic music performances. A wide variety of museums and galleries provide opportunities to view many of the world's artistic masterpieces. It is no surprise students want to come to London. London University alone has more than 50,000 students, and many more are enrolled at other universities, colleges and specialized schools. Students bring a more global perspective to their home campuses after experiencing the London study program.

Why choose this program?

The Contra Costa Community College District (Diablo Valley College, Contra Costa College, Los Medanos College and San Ramon Valley College) offers this unique program to enable students to study abroad while making normal progress toward their degree objectives, earning 12-15 fully transferable units in courses taught by community college faculty and local guest lecturers. This program is offered in conjunction with other community colleges in partnership with the American Institute of Foreign Study (AIFS), which provides transportation, living accommodations, and a wide range of student and instructional support services, including an optional preprogram tour of Europe. Students need not be currently enrolled at one of the sponsoring colleges in order to participate. Units earned will appear on transcripts from these fully accredited community colleges. Students may choose between living in a home stay (a home in residential London) or in a shared apartment in Kensington.

The semester in London program is offered every Fall semester.

Who are the faculty?

Courses are taught by faculty from the four participating colleges and other partnership campuses, and carry academic credit from your school.

What are the benefits of a Semester Abroad?

DVC students at Tower Bridge

It's a wonderful opportunity to enrich your personal and academic life in an unforgettable experience. Living and studying in another culture will broaden your appreciation and understanding of this complex and ever changing (and shrinking) world. You will have the opportunity to experience and gain knowledge about England (and European) life, history and culture in an environment that will make all you study and experience come to life. The knowledge you gain, friends you make and people you meet will last a lifetime.

London's Cultural Program

Included in the basic program price is a cultural component that includes a weekly program of extracurricular activities including day trips accompanied by professional guides (Cambridge, Stonehenge/Salisbury and Stratford-upon-Avon), five theater performances, and three walking tours (Shakespeare's London, Historic Bloomsbury walk and West End theater walk).
